What’s On Guide – October Half-Term 2017

It’s here again, and even earlier this year!  October half-term in the North Cornwall / Devon offers a wonderfully diverse mix of entertainment.  Alongside the usual Halloween activities, you will also find everything from classical concerts to supersonic cars, bobbing apples to swimming dogs!  There’s scary, silly, soggy and sozzled!  If we’ve missed an event, let us know in the comments below.

Trick or Treasure at Pirate’s Quest

Can you brave Roald Dahl’s infamous villains at Halloweden this half-term?  Eden Project visitors will be pitted against villains springing from the pages of some of the most popular children’s books ever as Roald Dahl’s Halloweden is unleashed.  The whole family can brave challenges from notorious characters such as the ghastly giants from Roald Dahl’s The BFG and those devious practical jokers, Mr and Mrs Twit.

Over 15,000 pumpkins to choose from – all different sizes, shapes and colours!  Once you have chosen your very own pumpkin/s why not come back in and join one of our Creation Time sessions?  Complete with your very own pumpkin carving kit to keep and plenty of craft supplies you can leave the mess with us but go home with your decorated pumpkin ready for the 31st!  Magic Martin, will be performing a fantastic magic show, and an added extra this year is a woodland ride on the tractor and trailers.

Freak week at Cotehele Mill

The mill complex will be decorated for Hallowe’en; staff and volunteers will be in fancy dress; there will be a children’s trail with treats. We’ll be milling on the Thursday and Sundays, plus there might possibly be some scary baking going on.  This event is free, but normal admission charges apply for the venue.

Piatti String Quartet

Cornish Apple Bobbing Championships

Dog Friendly.  Families are invited to Healeys this Autumn to battle it out to become kings and queens of the orchards. Head down to Healeys for a fun day out for all the family and the chance to win fantastic prizes! There will be apple bobbing competitions for both children and adults, starting at 11am in the courtyard. The winner will ‘bob’ the most apples in one minute to win a month’s worth of Cornish Rattler cyder (or juice) and a Sunday roast for two at the Old Bottlery Restaurant on the farm.  Mulled Rattler available as well as a hearty Sunday roast.

Canal to Coast Walk with Moor2Coast

Guided walks around Bude, exploring the beautiful countryside, looking at local history, archaeology and wildlife. Booking through Bude Tourist Information Centre.   Canal to Coast:  Easy circular ambles along the Bude canal to the coast and back to Bude.  The walk includes local knowledge, archaeology, natural history, geology and beautiful landscapes.  The walk is approximately three hours long.  Dogs are very welcome.  £12.50.

Healeys Halloween Trick-or-Treat Hunt

Bloodhound Supersonic Car Trial Run

Not a cheap event but very much a one-off.  On the 28th of October, Newquay will host the first ever trial run of the Bloodhound Supersonic Car, prior to an attempt to reach a new World Land Speed record of 1000 mph. The trial run will take the Car to speeds of up to 200 mph and will be driven by the current world land speed record title holder, Andy Green.  Come along and watch and take part in this historic event and even see for yourselves what it feels like to drive a supersonic car in our simulator.  £65 per adult, £20 per child, family discounts available.

Clovelly Apple Day,
Clovelly Village, Bideford, EX39 5TA

Apple pressing outside the Visitor Centre, so please do bring a bag of apples, watch them being pressed and taste the fresh juice or if you wish, you can bring more for pasteurisation and bottling for which there will be a charge (£1.90 per 75 cl bottle). On entry to Clovelly you will find the Apple crafts and activities in the Visitor Centre from 12:00-16:00. Enjoy some Apple Art and either carve, sculpt, decorate or do all of them with your apple to enter the Apple Art Competition! There will also be live music, apple bobbing, apple stamping, and especially for adults, apple cup making, which you can then use to enjoy a refreshing cider drink or perhaps some fresh apple juice! Fun Harvest Hunt down the village street with spooky stories and looking for clues to win a harvest treat, finishing at the New Inn.   Please book your place on arrival as spaces are limited.
