What’s On Guide: North Cornwall & Devon, Summer 2017

Wow – what an amazing summer we have lined up for 2017!  There is usually a great range of events throughout July and August but this year looks to be particularly promising.  Carnivals, music festivals, concerts, model trains, cider, ice-cream, and agricultural shows galore – there really is something for everyone.  What tickles your fancy?  If we’ve forgotten an event, let us know in the comments.  Have a great summer!

Camel River Festival, Wadebridge
15th July 2017

Celebrating the river camel that flows through the heart of Wadebridge. Stand Up Paddleboard racing and the now famous Sharp’s Raft Race in the early evening.  Live music, selection of Sharp’s quality ales and lagers, family fun, bouncy castles and bungee trampolines for the children. Food area including a hog roast, BBQ, Wild Bake  Pizza and sandwiches and refreshments.

The BIG Sheep has teamed up with Farmer Tom’s Ice Cream to give you FREE ICE CREAM on Saturday 15th July.  During the day we will be raising money for Children’s Hospice South West
Rick Turner, director of the flock at The BIG Sheep is looking forward to abandoning calorie counting for the day.  “I would advise everyone to forget the calories for just one day and indulge in one of the best ice creams in the West country because we all deserve a guilt free treat from time to time!”

The Launceston area group are holding an exhibition with a range of working layouts.  There will be traders in attendance with a range of model rail items for sale.  The RBL will provide refreshments for sale in the foyer.  Admission….Adults £4.00   Seniors £3.00  Children £1.00

Tavistock Carnival Day
Saturday 15th July, 2017

The finale of Tavistock Carnival Week with an all day fair in Bedford Square and the last chance to buy Carnival draw tickets. The procession leaves Down Road at 6.30pm, the theme this year being Heritage, Myths and Legends.

Delabole Carnival Week

Clovelly Maritime Festival, Clovelly
Sunday 16th July 2017

The day will be full of fun and packed with a programme of all sorts of activities and entertainment for all ages.  Then there’ll be lively music, street entertainment, crafty creations, sea story telling, puppet shows and family activities.  On the quay, there’ll be seafood kitchens and a range of food and art & craft stalls.  Free entry for under 16s if they come dressed as a pirate, mermaid, salty sea dog or fish wife.  Under 7s have free entry anyway, but we would love it if they come dressed up too.  So do come along and enjoy this fun-packed day out in support of the North Devon Hospice.  Standard admission charges include all entertainment.

Hatherleigh Festival,
20th – 23rd July 2017

Visitors will be treated to a wide range of music, from reggae to brass bands.  Fun family-friendly workshops will be taking place such as circus skills and dance, while exhibitions of local artists will be on display in the town.

Step Back in Time 2017 Festival, near Winkleigh, Devon

Our part of this great event is a celebration of everything that has become a ‘by-gone’, thanks to the march of progress. More traditional archaeology can be seen being surveyed, dug up, on display or in use on the show day!  Battle Re-Enactment & Living History, vehicles and machinery plus other fun items throughout the afternoon.

St Endellion Summer Music Festival, Collegiate Church of St Endelienta

Celebrating its 50th anniversary in 2008, the beautiful church of St Endelienta becomes concert venue for some of the most prestigious soloist and musicians in the UK. Nowadays the internationally famous festival fields a symphony orchestra and chorus of seventy-five who along with guest artistes present a program that encompasses the classics from Brahms to Stravinsky, music from Broadway and late night brass bands.

Launceston Agricultural Show, Kennards House, Launceston

This highly regarded annual show is a colourful mix of agriculture, crafts, local produce, displays and stands, bringing the local community together to welcome visitors to this rural area of Cornwall.  A wonderful, vibrant day out for all the family to experience and enjoy with a varied selection of entertainment during the day.

Leopallooza, Week St. Mary, Bude

It’s hard to remember that Leopallooza has been going for over a decade now.  One of the region’s most popular independent festivals, it features over 100 acts across numerous stages in a wooded valley.  This year, they are hosting The Cribs and Gabrielle Aplin, and will introduce you to new bands you won’t have heard of.  With free parking, free camping, workshops, entertainment, a bar and cocktail lounge, this is an all-round great festival experience.

Woolsery Agricultural Show,
31st July 2017

Summer in North Devon would not be complete without a visit to this ever popular show.  Classes include crafts, cattle and sheep, together with horse and pony competitions.  There will be a Dairy Marquee with displays such as yoghurt and ice cream making and the chance for children to “milk
a cow” along with competitions.  You’ll find bustling trade stalls offering locally made crafts and food with fairground rides and a bouncy castle for the children.  There’ll also be a family dog show,  a display of hounds, the Young Farmers’ “It’s a knockout” and to finish the day, a parade of vintage farm machinery.  It’s a great summer day out for all the family!

Lifeboat Weekend, Clovelly
5th August – 6th August 2017

Held in aid of the RNLI, this popular event is a celebration of the Clovelly lifeboat and its volunteer crew.   On Saturday, there will be a 2 mile sponsored sea swim from Bucks Mills to Clovelly.  Sunday will be a fun-packed day with games, competitions, entertainments, food and drink, music and other family fun in and around the harbour.  The Lifeboat House will be open to visitors and there’ll be operational displays by the Clovelly lifeboat.  Normal admission charges apply

Camelford Agricultural Show
Wednesday 9th August 2017

A traditional agricultural show for the local community and visitors alike. There’s plenty for you and your family to do, for instance, dog shows, vintage vehicle collections, displays of cattle, sheep and horses, sheep shearing displays, a heavy horse show and much more.  Anybody who’s interested in animals and horticulture will have a great day out, as will anybody who enjoys seeing lots of different farm yard animals so kids should have a great time as well!

Bude Carnival
Saturday 19th August 2017

Afternoon events start at 2:00pm at the Castle Grounds. The procession leaves the Wharf at 6:30pm. During the procession traffic restrictions will operate around the town. Starting at 2pm with events all day. Judging starts at 5.45 and the procession leaves the Lower Wharf at 6.30. Each year the carnival is given a new theme.

Holsworthy and Stratton Agricultural Show
24th August 2017

A fun filled day out for all the family in North Cornwall. Entertainment all day long including gymnastics, falconry, motorcycle stunts, Jive dancing, children’s sports, parade of horses and hounds, and horse jumping. Come and meet the livestock and see the grand parade of prize-winning cattle, sheep and pygmy goats.  Demonstrations throughout the day of thatching, woodturning, and sheep shearing. Punch and Judy shows throughout the day, Donkey Rides, and static display from the army cadets, and art from local children. Large marquees with craft, local food and drink plus the magnificent flower tent, and the WI and YFC exhibits. Bring your dog and enter it into the family dog show, visit the many stands exhibiting everything from tractors to handbags! A great day out for all.

Cornwall Folk Festival, Wadebridge

The August bank holiday weekend is the annual highlight for Cornish folkies, with the Cornwall Folk Festival taking place in various venues around Wadebridge.  Ceilidh dancing, arts and crafts, street entertainment and great local food and drink will be on offer.  This year, the line-up includes Dougie Maclean, Cara Dillon, Dosca, and countless talented folk artists from around the country and even the world.

Peppa Pig is returning to the BIG Sheep in 2017 Sunday 27h August. Everyone’s favourite cheeky little piggy is back by popular demand and will be visiting The BIG Sheep, Devon’s official top attraction on Bank Holiday Sunday 27th August. Peppa Pig will making appearances at The BIG Sheep at intervals between 11am and 3.30pm for children and families to say “hello”. Don’t forget to bring your camera!

Bude Jazz Festival, Various venues in Bude

Taking place throughout the final week of August, Bude Jazz Festival sees jazz fans coming from near and far to choose from over 75 different gigs in venues across the town.  Whether it’s big band band jazz, swing, jive or traditional, you will find some jazz to suit your tastes.  The street parades are a real highlight!

Esedhvos Festival of Cornish Culture, Launceston
30th August 2017 to 3rd September 2017

The Esedhvos Festival, is held every year at a different location in Cornwall to celebrate Cornwall’s distinctive identity and Celtic heritage, newly recognised under the Council of Europe’s Framework Convention for the Protection of National Minorities.  The host town for 2017 is Launceston and will include the annual Bardic ceremony on the Saturday.  There will also be a variety of events around the town, many of which are free, including a celebration of Cornish music and dance
