Most of Cornwall’s beautiful beaches are dog-friendly to some extent over the winter months, but there are still plenty of great spots that allow dogs year round even in the peak of summer. We’ve rounded up our 5 favourite beaches in North Cornwall that always allow dogs. If we’ve missed your top recommendation, add it in the comment section below.
5 – Bossiney Bay & Benoath Cove
Tintagel, Cornwall, PL34 0BD
One of our favourite beaches, Bossiney has to make our top 5 because so many people have not yet heard of it. What it lacks in terms of size and facilities, it makes up for with seclusion. The beach joins on to Benoath at mid to low tide, and the spectacular cliffs give it a cosy protected feel. Soft golden sand and clear waters, interesting rock formations, and even a few caves for good measure. There is a small car park by the road, next to the phone box and toilets. There is access over a field and steep steps (unsuitable for pushchairs or those with mobility problems).
Dogs are allowed all year round on and off lead.
No lifeguards.
4 – Daymer Bay
Near Padstow, North Cornwall, PL27 6SA
Daymer Bay lies in the estuary of the River Camel overlooking Padstow harbour. At low tide, there is a 2 mile stretch of sand to enjoy. Its gently sloping beach and relatively shallow estuary waters make it a nice spot for a paddle but take note there are no lifeguards. Despite its beautiful and sheltered position, it’s usually a lot quieter than its neighbours Rock and Polzeath.
Dogs are allowed all year round on and off lead.
No lifeguards.
3 – Mawgan Porth Beach
Near Newquay and Padstow Cornwall, TR8 4BA
The golden sands of Mawgan Porth are a must for anyone trying to escape the busier beaches of Newquay. Sheltered by tall cliffs and surrounded by grassy dunes, the beach is popular with surfers and families alike. There are good facilities in Mawgan Porth itself.
Dogs are allowed all year round on and off lead.
Seasonal lifeguards.
2 – Trebarwith Strand Beach
Tintagel, Cornwall, PL34 0HB
Trebarwith Strand is as popular with surfers as it is dog-walkers, and looks out over the imposing Gull Rock. Check tide times before you set off, because at high-tide the beach disappears entirely. At low tide, the sandy beach is accessed by walking over weathered rocks. There are free toilets, and if you get caught out in the rain there are some lovely little shops in Trebarwith, and Port William is a great dog-friendly pub overlooking the bay. Plenty of parking too!
Dogs are allowed all year round on and off lead.
Seasonal lifeguards.
1- Sandymouth Beach
Bude, Cornwall, EX23 9EG
Sandymouth Beach is just a couple of coves north of the busy beaches of Bude. At mid to high tide, the beach is covered leaving steep banks of shingle and spits of rock pointing into the sea. At low tide however, you can walk the 2 miles to Bude along the sand, and there’s always a secluded spot. The tall and twisted cliffs that overlook the beach include a waterfall, and there’s a National Trust car park, beach toilets, and a friendly seasonal café and surf hire. Families will love the rock pools and soft sand, while dog owners will appreciate the huge expanse of sand.
Dogs are allowed all year round on and off lead.
Seasonal lifeguards.
